In a thought-provoking short film, "The Future of Learning," Swedish telecommunications giant Ericsson takes a look at engagement learning in a technological era. The video was made as part of Ericsson's Networked Society series.
"Knowing something is probably an obsolete idea. You don't actually need to know anything -- you can find out at the point when you need to know it," self-described "slumdog professor" Sugata Mitra says in the video's opening.
"It's the teacher's job to point young minds towards the right kind of questions.
The teacher doesn't need to give any answers, the answers are everywhere. And we know now from years of measurements that learners who find the answers for themselves retain it better than if they're told the answer."
(Mitra is actually professor of educational technology at the School of Education, Communication and Language Sciences at Newcastle University in the U.K.)
The piece takes a look at what the future of education could be in our networked society and presents fundamental divergence from previous methods of rote memorization - in favor of tailored education where memorization may no longer be necessary for sake of pervasive information.

As mentioned by Steven Cohen in the blog of "Huffingtonpost" in the article "Distance Learning and the Future of Education", even classes that meet in person are making greater use of the web in delivering course content. Students set up web pages and use web services to communicate with each other. Most classes have course web sites that contain lectures, assignments and other resources. This really reminded me of our current experience.The web sites that help me to reach the lecture that has been implemented even an hour before or that I couldn't attend because of the train strike are really lifesavers. However, as a part of my personality and learning style, no distance learning environment or implementation gives me the taste of face-to-face course meetings.
ReplyDeleteThis video was very interesting as it talks about the need for an educational revolution that will embrace all kinds of new technologies. What I found really insightful was the analysis on the current school model that started out as a factory worker or military style model, where people are processed to be the same. It is true that if students don't succeed while going through this processing schools simply reprocess them the following year not changing anything at all in relation to the students needs or ways of learning.
ReplyDeleteI agree that students should not have to conform to such a system, nor be medicated if they don't fit in. It is the school that needs to same and there are some very innovative ideas mentioned in the film, such as the knewton software that captures data and then comes up with specific information about the learning and working habits of students (e.g. student learns better in the morning) and finding their path to success.
I agree we need an educational revolution and having information on line for everyone can be efficient and offer more flexibility but we need to consider how overwhelming it can be for some students. I have spent hours trying to find information on the internet on a subject because I had not learned effective research skills, this is also important to teach students, how to research and filter through information. Some students prefer discussions and guidance which is important in helping students to excel.
Students need to be prepared for surprises... we need to change the reason we have education, and the way we will guide students to understanding and learning but we also need to be cautious that we do not lose the human touch throughout this process.
